What happens if someone skips bail

Skipping a court appearance when you or a loved one are out on bail can be a very serious matter. The court will most likely issue an immediate warrant for your arrest, and you won’t be eligible for bail a second time. If you are thinking of doing this, don’t. This will make your situation much worse, and you won’t get far. Unfortunately, there are some people who do skip bail. They skip bail, even though their family members and/or loved ones bailed them out, in the hopes that the defendant would keep his/her life together. If this happens and you are involved, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Don’t harbor or assist them

Most people that skip bail will ask their family and/or friends to help or harbor them. Keep in mind that this is a crime and you now become subject to criminal arrest. The person asking you to harbor them is not asking a small favor but is asking you to risk going to jail. Don’t jeopardize your life now and risk being in a bad situation.

Speak to the Bail Bondsman

If the defendant skips out on their court date, the bail bondsman is going to face financial liability. You’ll want to make sure that you are not pulled into this financial situation, and that the bail bonds company does not associate you with this financial issue. Should this happen, immediately contact the bail bonds company and provide any information regarding the defendant’s whereabouts and status. If you bail someone out of jail and that person skips out on bail, the police & bail bonds company will be searching for that individual. They may pay you a visit to ask questions. Remember, if you don’t know where that person is and are not harboring them, then you are doing nothing wrong. But if you do harbor a person that has skipped bail, you can very well find yourself behind bars, and in need of a bail bondsman yourself.
