California Firearms / Gun Laws

Gun Possession in California

California is known to have some of the nation’s strictest gun laws, and you’ll need a license to purchase a firearm. However, if you have moved to California from out of state as a new resident, then you must do one of the following:
  1. Complete and submit a new resident report of firearm ownership form, to the California Department of Justice Bureau of Firearms.
  2. Sell or transfer the firearm to a California licensed firearms dealer.
  3. Sell or transfer the handgun(s) to a California police or sheriff's department.
But you should be aware that some varieties of firearms and shotguns cannot be brought into the state of California, as they have been classified as “Assault Weapons”. Failure to report imported handguns could result in criminal prosecution, resulting in imprisonment or a fine. In addition, the importer should expect forfeiture of handguns not reported. - https://gunlaw.com/importing-guns-into-california There are many state laws that restrict the type of firearm you can purchase, as California has a “Handgun Roster” law. This law restricts the types of firearms that are sold in California. For example, a certain brand and/or model of gun can be sold in other U.S. States, but may not be allowed in California. You can find the roster of handguns certified for sale on the State of California’s DoJ website - https://www.oag.ca.gov/firearms/certguns Another restriction is the magazine, or clip capacity. Many other U.S. states allow ‘high capacity’ magazines. However, they are restricted in the state of California, (unless you are a Law Enforcement officer or have a special permit). California defines a large capacity magazine as “any ammunition feeding device with a capacity to accept more than 10 rounds but shall not be construed to include a feeding device that is permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds nor shall it include any .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device (or, effective January 1, 2002, a tubular magazine contained in a lever-action firearm).https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/forms/awguide.pdf If you are thinking about purchasing a firearm, please research and follow all legal procedures. Guns are weapons, and they do injure and kill people each year.
